Symptoms
Most of the times this weird feeling in my shin a because of something non-serious, which can be you sitting in one position for long, or doing some exercise. But there are cases when this numbness and weird feeling is due to a serious medical condition, where you have to get yourself checked.
Weird feeling in my shin can be an isolated symptom, or it can be accompanied by a number of other symptoms including:
- Unable to feel anything on your shin (pain or cold/hot temperature).
- Difficulty in walking, or in moving your feet or leg.
- Feeling of pins-and-needles.
- Burning sensation.
- Feeling like something is crawling on your skin.
Causes
LEG SLEEP
This literally means you feel like your leg, or your shin, has fallen asleep, whereas medically it is known as transient paresthesia.
This usually happens when you sit in a particular position for too long and the pressure on your leg causes the blood flow to reduce in your leg and shin causing you have a weird feeling in my shin.
This may happen when you sit with your legs crossed for a long time, sitting for long time, and wearing pants that are very tight.
SCIATICA
This condition occurs when a nerve you have called sciatic nerve is injured or irritated. The sciatic nerve originates from your buttock area, or what is known as the gluteal area medically. This nerve is the longest, and gives branches in all our leg.
The pain and weird feeling it causes usually starts from the leg, and can occur anywhere between your back and down to your feet.
Symptoms of Sciatica include:
- Weird feeling in my shin or leg.
- Pain in back, buttock, or your leg.
- Pain that is worsened by movement.
- Loss of control over your bladder and bowel system.
You are on an increased risk of getting sciatica if you have an injury to your lower back, if you are overweight, if you are very active, if you have diabetes, or osteoarthritis.
Mild symptoms usually go away in a week. See a doctor if you feel these symptoms for more than a week, for a better diagnosis, and for an earliest intervention.
ALCOHOL USE
When alcohol is used in increased quantity, it causes toxins that damage your nerves. Nerves are important for your body parts to feel normal. Along with damaging nerves, alcohol decreases levels of thiamine (vitamin B1), folate, niacin (vitamin B3), vitamin B6, vitamin B12, and vitamin E. These vitamins are needed for your nerves to function normally.
Alcohol overuse can cause a number of symptoms, including:
- Numbness.
- Weird feeling in my shin or leg.
- Muscle weakness.
- No control over bladder or bowel movements.
SHIN SPLINTS
It is a condition where your shin has a throbbing ache after activity. There is a medical term for this condition called medial tibial stress syndrome. It occurs due to stress between your shin and the connective tissues (these tissues attach your muscles to your bones).
This happens when you have flat feet, poorly-fitted shoes, working out excessing without stretching your body first, or weak muscles around the area.
Symptoms include:
- Dull pain.
- Numbness and pins-and-needle feeling.
- Weird feeling in my shin.
HERNIATED DISK
Your spine has a column of disks closely stacked to each other. Herniated disk occurs when one or more of the disks slip out of their places, thereby compressing spinal nerves in the area.
This can cause weird feeling in my shin, and numbness in leg and down the legs.
DIABETES
Diabetes is a condition where the blood level in your body is high. This high sugar level, if remains high in your body for a long time, damages your nerves. This condition is medically known as peripheral neuropathy. It causes you to feel numbness which starts from your toes and goes up your legs.
Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:
- Severe leg pain.
- Weakness in muscles.
- Inability to balance yourself,
- Foot infections.
- Weird feeling in my shin or leg.
AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES
These diseases occur when your immune system attacks your healthy cells. There are some autoimmune diseases like Multiple Sclerosis and Guillain-Barre Syndrome that occur when your immune system attacks your nerves. Some viral infections also cause the condition.
Symptoms of these conditions include:
- Weird feeling in my shin and leg.
- Tingling in leg.
- Weakness.
- Pain.
STROKE
This happens when a blood vessel of your brain bleeds, and is damaged and ruptured, or when blood is not able to reach your brain properly.
It is one of the leading causes of death, which makes focusing on the symptoms important. One of the first symptoms of a stroke is numbness or a weird feeling.
Symptoms of stroke include:
- Numbness and weakness of a side of body, be it face, arm, or leg.
- Confusion.
- Trouble speaking.
- Cannot see properly.
- Severe headache.
- Weird feeling in my shin, leg, or face.
PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE
Your heart gives a major artery that supplies your body called the Aorta, other than that it gives small branches called the peripheral arteries.
Sometimes these peripheral arteries may be blocked which leads to reduction or no blood blow to a particular artery.
If you are a smoker, have high blood pressure, or diabetes, you might be at a greater risk of having peripheral artery disease.
It usually involves arteries that go and supply your legs. Symptoms include:
- Weird feeling in my shin.
- Numbness.
- Pain
RESTLESS LEG SYNDROME
In this condition you have an uncontrollable urge to keep your legs moving because you have an uncomfortable feeling if you do not. It usually happens when you lie down, or are about to sleep.
This may cause weird sensation in my shin, movement will cause you relief, and your leg may twitch when you are sleeping.
FIBROMYALGIA
It is a disorder where you have a generalized pain in your muscles and bones, which comes along with you feeling tired, sleepy, and issues of mood. This disorder makes your pain make feel more severe than it actually is.
Symptoms of this disorder include:
- Weird sensation in my shin or leg, or whole body.
- Generalized pain.
- Brain-fog (inability to concentrate, focus, and think).
TARSAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
The Sciatic nerve in your body gives a branch called posterior tibial nerve. There is a tunnel like structure in your ankle where this nerve passes through called the tarsal tunnel. When extra pressure is exerted on this tunnel, it compresses this nerve. It may cause you to experience weird sensations in my shin. Additionally, it may cause you sharp pain, shock like feeling, and a sensation of burning.
PERIPHERAL NERVE TUMOR
These are tumors around your peripheral tumors and can occur anywhere in your body. Schwannoma is one such tumor which can occur in your leg and cause you experience weird sensations in my leg.
Treatment
If the weird sensation in your shin is mild, you can manage it at home. Usually taking rest, using ice or heat compress, taking over-the-counter pain killers, specific exercises, or massage might help you.
In case you are suffering from severe sensations of numbness, see a doctor. Your doctor will suggest some medicines, physical therapy, or surgery-if needed.
When to see a doctor?
The weird sensation in your shin is usually mild, and should be okay if it lasts for less than a week. If it remains for more than a week see a doctor.
Moreover, seek immediate help in case you see any of the symptoms mentioned below:
- Confusion.
- Inability to think, or focus.
- One side paralysis.
- Severe headache.
- Severe sensation of feeling weird.
