Pharmaceutical Information Benzoyl Peroxide

Medication Information: Acne is one of the most common causes of skin blemishes that can be treated. About 9 out of 10 teens develop some form of acne. Most cases are usually mild and improve with the use of ointments such as benzoyl peroxide. But it usually takes several years.

Benzoyl peroxide has three functions: killing bacteria, reducing inflammation, and opening closed pores. Benzoyl peroxide can be obtained from pharmacies without a prescription.

Benzoyl peroxide is also used in combination with antibiotics to treat acne (brands such as Duac, Quinoderm and Epiduo). Some of these medications can only be obtained with a doctor's prescription.

Contraindications to the use of benzoyl peroxide

Pay attention to the expiration date of the medicine and do not take it if the medicine in your hand has expired.

Never give the medicine to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.

Do not take more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.

Check for drug interactions and be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you are taking.

Drug interaction of benzoyl peroxide

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter medicines and herbal products) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Note that dapsone on the skin may interact with benzoyl peroxide.

Tips to consider before using benzoyl peroxide

Some medications may not be prescribed under certain conditions, and some medications may be prescribed if additional treatment is needed. Therefore, it is best for your doctor to be aware of the following before taking benzoyl peroxide:

  •  If you are currently taking certain medications. These medicines include all the medicines available, whether you are prescribed them or taking them without a doctor's prescription, such as herbal medicines and complementary medicines.
  •  If you have ever been allergic to any medication.

Possible side effects of benzoyl peroxide

All medications, along with their positive effects, can cause unwanted side effects in the body. However, these complications do not occur in all people. Over time, your body will adjust to the new medication and these symptoms will go away, but if the following symptoms persist or become painful, consult your doctor.

Dry skin and skin irritation: If any of these things are annoying, reduce the number of times and the amount of ointment used or stop using the drug for a few days.

Tell your doctor if you have any other symptoms that you think may be due to benzoyl peroxide.

How to store benzoyl peroxide

Store the medicine in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
