Imipramine Drug Information

Drug Information: Imipramine belongs to a group of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. It is commonly used to treat depression in adults. However, imipramine is also used to treat a completely different condition in children, enuresis.

The exact cause of depression is not well known. Anyone can be at risk for depression. It can start for no apparent reason or as a result of life events such as social issues, loss of loved ones, and illness. Medications such as imipramine help reduce depressive symptoms.

Enuresis is a common disorder in children. Imipramine blocks the transmission of messages to some nerves that end in the bladder. This mechanism prevents acetylcholine from acting on its receptor. Acetylcholine causes the message to empty the bladder. Imipramine can reduce the need to urinate. Imipramine for children is prescribed by a specialist. This medicine is not suitable for children under 6 years old.
