The source of hip pain can be any part of the skeletal structure and components of the hip.

Muscles, ligaments, joints, bursae (small, fluid-filled sacs that act as shock absorbers between bones and ligaments, etc.) can all be damaged and cause hip pain.

Shooting pain in the hips is one of the types that can be very painful for us.

General classification of hip pain

The following is a general classification of hip pain:

  • Trauma to the hip:
  • Dislocation of hip
  • Sprain: Injuries that lead to stretching, strain and tearing of the hip joints.
  • Fractures of the hip bones

  • Problems and disorders in the joints, muscles and nerves
  • Arthritis or arthritis of the hip (such as osteoarthritis)
  • Inflammation of the bursae:

Or hip bursitis, the bursae is a small, fluid-filled sac that is located between the bones, muscles, and tendons and prevents repeated wear of these components. Inflammation of the walls of these bursae is called bursitis, which can cause shooting pain in the hip.

Sometimes a person may also describe the pain caused by hip bursitis as toothache-like.

  • nerve entrapments:

Sometimes pressure on the nerves can cause excruciating pain that can be felt as shooting or radiating pain.

Other causes such as:

  • Infections
  • Blocked blood flow

Some drugs such as:

  • Steroids
  • Fluoroquinolone antibiotic (ciprofloxacin)

These drugs increase hip joint problems.

And less common cases of hip pain, will be metastasis and spread of cancerous tumors of other parts of the body to the hip bones.

Iliotibial band syndrome or IT syndrome for short:

Snapping hip syndrome

Greater trochanteric pain syndrome

Piriformis syndrome
